Deleting a photo by mistake can take only a second. Recovering it can be much harder, especially when the picture is something you cannot replace.
A family photograph, school project, important screenshot or video can disappear after one wrong tap. The first reaction is often to search for a recovery app, but that is not always the best place to start.
Before installing anything, check whether the photo or video is still sitting in your phone’s Trash, Bin or Recently Deleted folder.
On Android devices using Google Photos, deleted backed-up photos and videos remain in the trash for 60 days, while items that were not backed up remain there for 30 days, according to Google’s current guidance. Once an item has been permanently deleted, Google says it cannot be restored through Google Photos.
Start with the Trash or Bin
Open the photo app you normally use.
If you use Google Photos on Android, open Google Photos, tap Collections, then Trash. Find the photo or video, press and hold it and choose Restore. Google says restored items return to the Google Photos library and can also return to the phone’s gallery.
The exact wording can differ between phones. Some manufacturers call the folder Trash, while others use Recycle Bin, Recently Deleted or a similar name.
The key idea is the same: check the deleted-items folder before trying anything more complicated.
What if the photo is not in the Trash?
Do not immediately assume that it has disappeared permanently.
It may still exist somewhere else.
Check your Google Photos account and make sure you are signed into the Google Account that was being used for backup. Google specifically recommends checking the backup account when photos appear to be missing.
This is a common source of confusion. Someone may have several Google accounts on a phone, while their photographs were actually being backed up to a different account.
Switch to the account that was used for the original backup and search again.
Check your Archive
A missing photograph may not actually have been deleted.
Google Photos allows users to archive photos. An archived photo disappears from the normal Photos view but remains available in the account. Google recommends checking the Archive when a photograph appears to be missing.
Open Google Photos and look through your archived items.
If you find the photograph there, you can unarchive it.
Search instead of scrolling
If you have thousands of photographs, manually scrolling through your entire library is inefficient.
Use the search function in your photo app.
Search by a person, place, object, date or other information associated with the picture. Google Photos supports searching for photographs using terms such as locations, objects and people when that information is available in the account.
A photograph can appear to be missing simply because it has a different date or was stored in a location you were not expecting.
Check folders from other apps
Not every image on a phone necessarily comes from the camera.
Pictures can be created or downloaded by messaging applications, browsers, social media apps, screenshots and other services.
Google recommends checking device folders when photographs from other apps or devices are missing from Google Photos.
Open your phone’s Files or Gallery application and look through folders such as screenshots, downloads and folders associated with the apps you use.
The missing picture may never have been deleted from the main camera folder because it was stored somewhere else.
What happens when Google Photos backup was turned off?
This is where recovery becomes more difficult.
If a photograph existed only on the phone and was deleted without being backed up, there may not be another copy in Google Photos.
Google states that if an item is not in Google Photos or Gallery trash and was permanently deleted without a backup, it may not be recoverable.
This is why backup is more useful before something goes wrong than after it happens.
Can Google Takeout recover deleted photos?
No.
Google Takeout can export data that still exists in your account, but Google says it cannot retrieve content that has already been permanently deleted.
That distinction matters because people sometimes assume that any missing Google data can be recovered through an account export.
If the file has already been permanently deleted, an export tool does not bring it back.
What about photos stored on a memory card?
If your phone uses a removable memory card, check it separately.
Google notes that deleted photographs and videos may remain on a removable memory card in some circumstances.
Do not assume that deleting an item from one photo application means every possible copy has disappeared.
Look at the folders on the memory card if you have one and know the photo was stored there.
Be careful with recovery applications
When someone loses an important photograph, it is tempting to install the first recovery application that promises to restore everything.
Take a moment before doing that.
A recovery app cannot magically restore a file that no longer exists in any accessible storage or backup. Some apps may also request access to personal photographs and files.
Start with the phone’s built-in recovery folders and the cloud backup services you actually use.
How to prevent the problem in the future
The best time to solve photo loss is before it happens.
Turn on photo backup and check periodically that new photographs are actually being uploaded.
Do not assume that having Google Photos installed automatically means every photograph is backed up. Google advises users to check their backup settings and device folders.
It is also worth keeping particularly important photographs in more than one location.
For example, important family photographs or important documents can have a cloud backup and a separate copy on another storage device.
That way, deleting one copy does not necessarily mean losing the only copy.
The important thing to remember
If you have just deleted a photo or video, do not panic and do not immediately empty the Trash.
Check the Trash or Bin first.
Then check your cloud account, Archive, device folders and other locations where another copy might exist.
If the item has been permanently deleted and there is no backup or other copy, recovery may no longer be possible. Google’s current guidance is clear that permanently deleted Google Photos content cannot be restored.
That is why regular backup remains the simplest protection against the moment when an irreplaceable photograph disappears.
